About Professor Ifti

From a classroom in Gujrat to the cybersecurity faculty at NOVA.

Every course I teach and every book I write is shaped by one belief: technical mastery only matters if it's paired with the confidence to apply it. Here's how I got here.

Teaching philosophy

Deductive foundations. Inductive practice.

My classroom runs on a blend of two approaches: deductive instruction to build the core theory, then inductive, hands-on exercises — penetration testing labs, cloud projects, network simulations — where students apply that theory against real scenarios and work backward to the principles that explain what they're seeing.

That combination is deliberate. Theory without practice doesn't survive contact with a real system; practice without theory doesn't transfer to the next unfamiliar problem. I want students to leave with both — the technical mastery and the strategic thinking to keep adapting as the field moves.

Beyond the syllabus, I push students toward internships, part-time IT roles, certifications, and research — the real-world exposure that turns classroom knowledge into a career.

This is the short version — the full teaching portfolio covers instructional design, student engagement, and a complete sample lesson plan.

My story

The long way to the faculty office

Two continents, two careers, and one constant — teaching.

1985 · Gujrat, Pakistan

An education that started early

Graduated Govt. Muslim High School, then Govt. Zamindar Degree College, before earning a bachelor's degree from Government Sir Syed Degree College, affiliated with Punjab University.

1992

The teaching career begins

Started teaching in Gujrat — the first step in what's now been an uninterrupted, three-decade-plus career in education.

1995

Founding Seraj School of Sciences

Founded the school myself; it quickly grew into one of the leading high schools in Gujrat. I served seven years as its principal — the youngest in the area at the time.

2001

A move to the United States

Relocated with my family and started over professionally — working across retail and IT while rebuilding a career from the ground up.

2001 – 2013

Graduate school, twice over

Earned an MBA in Information Management & Marketing and an MS in Cybersecurity & Information Assurance, while collecting more than a dozen IT certifications along the way.

~2013 – 2020

Seven years inside NOVA's IT department

Worked in IT at Northern Virginia Community College's Manassas campus, then began teaching CompTIA A+ as an adjunct professor in the IET department and the Workforce Division.

2020

Full-time faculty

Accepted a full-time faculty position in the IET Division at NOVA, where I still teach CompTIA A+ certification classes every semester.

Now

Ph.D. in progress

Pursuing a Ph.D. in Information Technology with a concentration in Cyber Engineering at the University of the Cumberlands — while continuing to teach, write, and mentor.

Credentials, in short

Ph.D. (in progress) · MS Cybersecurity & Information Assurance · MBA Information Management & Marketing · Harvard Higher Education Teaching Certificate · 10+ IT certifications
